Grad school As you start your final semester of college, youre most likely examining what you want your life to look like after you walk across the stage. If the grad school route is right for you, this is a good time to make sure youve tied up any loose ends for the grad school application process. Make sure all appropriate documents are submitted and begin preparing for admissions interviews at various schools. See what she had to say about her experience at Trinity University: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Sarah: The Trinity University campus is in the heart of San Antonio, about 10 minutes north of downtown, 10 minutes south of the San Antonio International Airport, and just five minutes away from a major shopping area. Public transportation is extremely limited, and most students depend on cars for travel. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Sarah:Professors are always very available, and they are willing to help students grow. Professors act as academic advisers and teach all of their classes. Some introductory-level classes do have peer tutors, which are similar to teaching assistants. Peer tutors sometimes facilitate discussions during classes, but they mainly lead study groups or tutoring sessions outside of class. Because Trinity University is a small school, students and professors often form bonds that last past graduation. I graduated in 2011, and I still seek advice from two of my former professors. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Sarah:Trinity University has mandatory on-campus living for three years. All the dorms and dining facilities are very nice, and they are constantly being updated. The three-year living requirement means that ones friends are never far away and that there is always something going on. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Sarah:Trinity University is a liberal arts school. Students are required to take a wide variety of general education classes, as well as courses focusing on their major. I studied International Studies and Spanish because the subjects had always interested me, and I wanted to work internationally. As I have said before, Trinity University is a small school, and they do a good job of supporting all of their departments. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Sarah:I had absolutely no trouble making friends my freshman year. Though I did rush and join a sorority, about half of my friends did not. My non-Greek friends also had no trouble forming lasting friendships. Greek life is a pretty big part of the Trinity University social scene, but it does not make or break your social life. Rush is a semester-long process, and it is a great opportunity to make new friends even if you decide not to join Greek life. Some of my closest friends are those I met through rush, even though we ended up joining different sororities. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Sarah:As great as Trinity University is, I have never found the Career Center to be very helpful. Many organizations do recruit on campus. Trinity University holds a career fair every year, and organizations frequently hold information sessions in the student union. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Sarah:They are numerous, convenient, and spacious. Trinity University offers many different types of study areas to accommodate as many learning habits as possible. Each dorm has at least one study room, with the more modern ones having one or more on each floor. On upper campus, where the classrooms are, each building also has multiple study rooms. Most students choose to study in the library. The library has four levels. The area near the coffee shop is more social, and students often hang out on the nearby couches when taking a much deserved study break. Coates University Center, the student union, was recently updated, and it is the main thoroughfare for students passing through on their way to and from classes. It also contains one of the schools dining halls. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Sarah:There is always something going on in San Antonio. I do not ever remember being bored as a student. There are a number of restaurants and shopping areas nearby, the zoo is within walking distance, and downtown is an easy 10-minute drive on the freeway. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sarah:The student body is small. Class sizes average around 25 students, which I liked. The small class sizes enabled professors and students to get to know each other, which in turn made students more accountable for their attendance and participation in class. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sarah:One of my favorite classes was called The Individual in World Politics. The professor divided us into three groups, with each group reading a different book. Carolyn: The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is a beautiful green campus with lots of trees and rolling land in a typical, rural American town. The Kinnickinnic River runs through campus, and it takes only 20 minutes at most to walk from one end of campus to the other. Most students walk or bike. There is also a reasonably priced taxi service in town to get students to places further away from campus. The campus is considered to be a very safe place. I never felt unsafe walking there, even at night. It is well lit with campus police on patrol 24 hours a day. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at University of Wisconsin-River Falls? Carolyn: I found the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants to be very approachable and helpful. The class sizes are reasonably small, and individual attention is the norm. There is also help available from tutors if needed. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Carolyn: The dorms are all close to class buildings, and students can easily walk to classes. The walkways are cleared right away after a snowfall, so walking is always an option. The food at the university is tasty, and many healthy options are included on the menu. There are lots of other dining choices within minutes of campus, including pizza places, Chinese restaurants, Mexican restaurants, and several fast food choices. There is a theater just blocks away that has been family-run and owned for years and years, and it still offers movie tickets for $3.00 and buttered popcorn for $1.00. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Carolyn: The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is noted for its agriculture major. It also has a very good education department, which is the course of study that I chose. I majored in elementary education. There is a campus day care on site which has a very good reputation for early childhood education. The music department is very good, as well, and that was my minor area of study. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Carolyn: The campus is a very friendly one. It is a fairly small university in a small town, and the River Falls population is roughly 15,000 people. It is easy to get to know other students, especially within ones major area of study. How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services at University of Wisconsin-River Falls? Carolyn: The student support services are very helpful, and once again, because it is a small university in a small town, individual help is available. How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Carolyn: The university library is a very good library, and it has everything needed for your studying. There is also a beautiful library downtown in River Falls which is only a few blocks from campus. It is a multi-purpose library, and it has all the latest technical equipment needed for todays operations. Describe the surrounding town. Carolyn: The city of River Falls is a small community. Students can feel safe walking the streets even at night. There are several shops and stores within the city, as well as restaurants and fast food places. River Falls is only about 15 miles from Woodbury, Minnesota and 30 miles from St. Paul, Minnesota. There is every shopping and dining option imaginable there. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Carolyn: The student body is a little over 6,000 students, and the class sizes are ideal. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Carolyn: I particularly remember Dr. Elliot Wold, who was my voice teacher and choir teacher at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He has since retired, but he was a very dedicated and talented man who loved music. I would say that he impacted my life because he had such a strong work ethic and love of music and teaching. Traveling is not about being selfish and leaving our country, it’s about discovering more about ourselves. Here are five benefits that traveling, especially traveling alone, can do for self-growth. A Change in Perspective Traveling exposes us to new and being exposed to different cultures can greatly change our standards. Traveling enables you to witness how people from different countries live their way of life, and how they approach the things they do. Apart from being exposed to new cultures, you’ll also see how people from different social classes live their lives.   Seeing how people from different social classes live their lives helps you appreciate the blessings that you have back home. Traveling will also teach you to be more contented with what you have, rather than yearning for things that you don’t have.   Having a change in perspective will also help you to be more open and to appreciate even the smallest of the things that are given to you. You’ll be able to witness the happiness of other people even if it appears as if they have nothing compared to what you have. Traveling helps us open our minds and teaches us to be more thankful. Sharpening Your Mind Doing the same thing again and again for a year can turn you similarly into a robot. Robots are programmable and can be programmed to do things repeatedly, similar to an autopilot. Following this, the same daily routine slows our minds down because we can’t exercise our minds to think critically or do things we haven’t done before.   Unlike staying at home or in the office, traveling open up our mind to process new sounds, places, and sights that we haven’t encountered before. Encountering new things helps our brain workout which then sharpens our mind. Once you’ve finished traveling, you’ll find yourself to be more organized and creative. An Opportunity to Experience New Things Another benefit of traveling can contribute to our personal development is the opportunity to experience new things. Experiencing new things such as eating out at new restaurants or finding a new hobby is an entirely different experience. Compared to traveling, you’ll be able to come out of your comfort zone.   Coming out of your comfort zone to experience new things such as interacting with new people can help you for better or for worse. Experiencing new things such as doing what the locals are doing, or eating the local foods is something you can gain from traveling. It wouldn’t hurt to try out something new, because you don’t know what will happen unless you try.   Experiencing new things helps shape you into a well-rounded person. For instance, you can give skydiving a chance, and even if you didn’t enjoy your first try, you’ll be able to relate to the feeling once you hear someone talking about it. There is more to it than just trying out new things, trying out new things also boosts your self-confidence. Takeaway Stepping out of your house for a few days and travel to places you haven’t been to before helps freshen up your mind. A fresh mind will help you become more open to accepting new opportunities. Opportunities that you were not confident to take before because you were too afraid that you’ll mess up.   Traveling helps you become more confident with the things you do because it changes your perspective, sharpens your mind, and pushes you out of your comfort zone.
